IV Daily Bulletin gets it wrong, SGV Tribune and Whittier Daily News get it right

The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin has an article by Sandra Emerson today about who filed for the June primary elections. Unfortunately there information is, once again, wrong and incomplete.

In reporting about the 60th Assembly District they report that Curt Hagman is unopposed. However, yesterday Democrat Gregg Fritchle filed his papers in Los Angeles County.

In their coverage of the 42nd Congressional race they only mention that David Su and Lee McGroarty are challenging Rep. Gary Miller for the Republican nomination, forgetting about Phil Liberatore who filed in Los Angeles County. They also fail to mention that Democrat Michael Williamson and Libertarian Mark Lambert are on the ballot.

Maybe the reporter didn't realize that a legislative district can include more than one county and only looked at San Bernardino county filings. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune and Whittier Daily News, owned by the same company as the Daily Bulletin, didn't make the same mistake when reporting about the races. Both mention Fritchle in the 60th and report about all candidates in the 42nd.

In January, the Daily Bulletin published a similar story that failed to mention candidates in the 42nd race and 32nd State Senate race. Maybe the newspapers need to share notes so the Daily Bulletin doesn't make this mistake for a third time in a row on the next story.

Update: 72nd Assembly Filing Update

Assemblyman Chris Norby will not be facing a primary challenge as James Gerbus, who started the filing process, did not finish it as the 5pm deadline passed.

Norby will be facing Green Party candidate Jane Rands who officially qualified for the ballot today.

Norby may be facing a Democratic challenger, but we will have to wait until Monday to find out. Democrat Esiquio Ramos Uballe returned the paper work today but has not officially qualified for the ballot yet. This probably means that the signatures on the nomination form still have to be verified.

Update (March 17): Democrat Esiquio Ramos Uballe has qualified for the ballot.

Friday March 12 Morning Filing Update

Bill Simon Endorses Liberatore in 42nd

Former Gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon has endorsed Republican candidate Phil Liberatore in 42nd Congressional race. The 42nd seat is currently held by Republican Rep. Gary Miller.

Simon said, "I am pleased to add my endorsement to Phil Liberatore for Congress in the 42nd District. All of us long for a breath of fresh air to sweep through our government-both State and Federal – and Phil is just that. As a CPA, USC Graduate, devoted husband, father and successful businessman, Phil brings honesty, integrity and accountability to government. The worst news for Washington is the voters of the 42nd in California are sending a CPA to Washington who intends to scrutinize both the budget and government. Please remember your voice matters and your vote counts! Vote on June 8th!"

Hagman looks to be unopposed

With just two days remaining to file for the 2010 elections, conservative Assemblyman Curt Hagman looks to be unopposed in the primary and general election. Hagman has done a good job in his first term and his conservative voting record has helped him avoid a recall attempt like neighboring Assemblymembers have faced.

Hagman filed his reelection paperwork on Monday.

Rep. Miller, David Su appear in article about Congress' Approval Rating

The Daily Bulletin has an article about Congress' slumping approval rating and possible reasons for it. It features some interesting quotes from Rep. Gary Miller on how many people contact his office in a week (about 1,000) and how he interacts with them. I was surprised

David Su is the challenger the Daily Bulletin choose to talk to about Miller. He had several quotes including "A lot of people in my area don't even know who Congressman Gary Miller is. I think that's a problem. When he comes back from Washington, he is never at public events."

The List of Possible Political Drop Outs

With three more days of candidate filing left I thought I would look at the list of candidates who may be rethinking their plans.

Below are individuals who took out signature in-lieu (SIL) forms to lower the cost of the filing fee, but have not yet pulled nomination papers. Nomination papers must be filed to place your name on the ballot.

Maybe they are just waiting until the last minute, but this could also be the first indication of a possible drop out.

Lee McGroarty Racks Up Another Endorsement

I was reading ChinoHills.com, which is a great webpage for us CH residents, and noticed that they had posted a story about McGroarty getting the endorsement of "The Independence Caucus." Not knowing a single thing about this group I went to their webpage which stated that:
The Independence Caucus operates as an "open-source" organization.
It looks like this group isn't really an organization at all, rather a loose confederation of people with similar ideological views. So what the value there is in this endorsement is unknown. I would be interested to know if Miller sought their endorsement and my bet would be that he has never heard of them. That being said, it looks like Lee is out there and making a real go of it.
