Calvary Chapel Founder Chuck Smith Says He Did Not Endorse Phil Liberatore

The Campaign of Rep. Gary Miller has posted a letter from Calvary Chapel Founder Chuck Smith on their web site.

The letter states,

"It has come to my attention that recently it has been stated that I have endorsed a candidate for the upcoming GOP nomination for the 42nd Congressional district. This is not the case, while I have expressed my admiration for Christians who desire to enter into Public Service, it is not my intent to endorse any particular candidate."

Yesterday we posted a story asking if Liberatore was being misleading about his support from Chuck Smith when he put out a press release titled, "Congressional Candidate Phil Liberatore Praised by Calvary Chapel Founder Pastor Chuck Smith."

Miller's site, under the title,"CAUGHT: Liberatore Not Really Endorsed by Religious Leader," said,

"Phil Liberatore, the guy running against Congressman Miller, has been implying in his campaign literature and sparsely attended events that the founding pastor of Calvary Chapel has endorsed his campaign. This is not true.

Several of Gary’s supporters have contacted Pastor Chuck Smith for clarification. Today, Pastor Smith released the following statement:

“It has come to my attention that recently it has been stated that I have endorsed a candidate for the upcoming GOP nomination for the 42nd Congressional District. This is not the case, while I have expressed my admiration for Christians who desire to enter into Public Service, it is not my intent to endorse any particular candidate.”

Congressman Miller is a longtime member of Calvary Chapel Golden Springs and has the support of all the major pro-life and pro-family organizations."

The Liberatore press release never used the word "endorse," but the comment from Miller states Liberatore, "has been implying in his campaign literature and sparsely attended events that the founding pastor of Calvary Chapel has endorsed his campaign." So there is obviously more to the story than just the press release.

Plus, with Chuck Smith putting out a letter this story will get more attention.

  1. Again non-story start doing some real reporting. Btw how come you aren't talking about miller voting for tarp bailing out fha cosponsoring bills with barney frank, violating any conservative value left in d.c.
And how come no one is writing how miller is a hiocrit call phil a tax fraud. Isn't miller the one that lied on his taxes to avoid paying capitol gains? Now that's tax fraud if I've ever scene it. Write better stories!

  2. If it is such a non-story then why do you keep feeling the need to comment on it?
