Rep. Gary Miller Joins the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute in Honoring “Angels in Adoption”

On Wednesday, the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) hosted its 12th Annual Angels in Adoption Gala in Washington, DC. The gala highlights the work of celebrities and individuals across the country working tirelessly on behalf of children in U.S. foster care and orphans around the world. This year, Rep. Gary Miller nominated Keith and Jennifer McNichols of Chino Hills as his 2010 Angels in Adoption.

Following the gala, Rep. Gary Miller released the following statement:

“Every year I look forward to honoring a Southern California family that changes lives and communities through adoption, and Keith and Jennifer McNichols have done just that. In addition to their three biological children, Keith and Jennifer McNichols have lovingly integrated five Ethiopian children into their home. Through the McNichols’ example and passion for adoption, several other families in their community have also adopted children from Ethiopia. Keith and Jennifer McNichols’ commitment to the betterment of the lives of children less fortunate than themselves and their dedication to demonstrating their faith through actions are truly commendable.”

About Keith and Jennifer McNichols:

Keith and Jennifer McNichols have three biological children and have adopted five children from Ethiopia. In total, the McNichols’ have spearheaded the adoption of 18 children from Ethiopia to five different families in the Chino Hills area and counseled with families nationwide both pre- and post-adoption. Their daughters, Fevan and Tsion, were 14 and 8 when adopted in 2003. Unknowingly, Fevan carried a rare form of tuberculosis and would have died within 1-2 years had she stayed in Ethiopia. In 2005, the McNichols returned to Ethiopia twice – once to find Tsion’s aged grandparents and a second time to adopt a six year old boy they’d met named Miki. Miki worked as a shoeshine boy to support his parents before they died; after that, he was on the streets. In 2006, the McNichols returned again to Ethiopia on a service project and met Fikerte and Shawn – 8 and 9 year old siblings living more or less on the street. Fikerte and Shawn came home in 2007. The McNichols have spread their passion for adoption and orphans to their local church which is now supporting a new children’s home in Ethiopia. Fevan, now in college, plans on traveling to Ethiopia during the holidays to begin a service ministry caring for the elderly. Others in the family will go in the summer of 2011 to work with the orphan home with a group from the church.

Dear Community Members,

I am pleased to announce the opening of my "mobile" office locations for your convenience.
Once a month at various locations throughout the district, my staff will be on hand in your community to answer questions and provide support for state related issues.

This service could not have been possible without the generous support of our local cities. I would also like to note that these offices will not cost any additional taxpayer dollars. They are simply a convenience extended to those unable to travel to my Chino Hills district office.

Sanchez And Tran To Debate October 13 On KOCE-TV’s Real Orange

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF. (October 5, 2010) –The top polling candidates for the 47th Congressional District office will hold their only pre-election debate on two special broadcasts of KOCE’s Real Orange. Incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, and challenger, Republican Assemblyman Van Tran will tape two 30-minute debate programs on Wednesday, October 13. The debate specials, moderated by veteran news anchor Ed Arnold, will premiere on Wednesday, October 13 and Thursday, October 14 at 6:30 PM, respectively.

Encore broadcasts of the debate can be seen through October 20 on KOCE with additional broadcasts on the OC Channel. Check listings The programs will also be available online at video.koce.org by Friday, October 15.

Representatives from the local media are invited to attend the tapings, as well as a post-event press conference with the candidates. This event is not open to the general public. There was a common theme through the "most read stories," this month. People are researching candidates.

We had a large number of "new visitors" who came to the blog while searching for a specific candidate or came following a link to a specific story. Esiquio Uballe (D) has a new ad in his attempt to defeat 72nd Assemblyman Chris Norby (R).

Rep. Loretta Sanchez: "Vietnamese...trying to take this seat"

We don't normally cover news from Rep. Loretta Sanchez's district but this one caught our eye.

Politico has a story about a recent interview Sanchez did with Univision in Spanish. According to a translation Sanchez said, "The Vietnamese and the Republicans are, with an intensity, trying to take this seat from which we have done so much for our community — to take this seat and give it to this Van Tran, who is very anti-immigrant and very anti-Hispanic."

Tran's campaign said that this, "attack against immigrants and the Vietnamese community on national television is shocking. The 47th congressional district belongs to the people and not an individual ethnicity."

Former Assemblyman Todd Spitzer Fired from D.A.'s Office

Former Assemblyman and OC Supervisor Todd Spitzer has been fired from the District Attorney's Office. He had been employed with the office as an assistant district attorney. Spitzer had been seen as the front runner to replace current DA Tony Rackauckas if he doesn't seek re-election in 2014.

Former Democratic Congressional Candidate titles story about OC Assembly Democratic candidates "Not one White Guy in the bunch."

Now for a "What were they thinking," story from a former Three Corners Congressional candidate.

2008 Democratic Congressional candidate Ron Shepston, who posts on Daily Kos as "CanYouBeAngryAndStillDream," today posted a story titled, "Not One White Guy in the Bunch." He describes three Democratic candidates running for the State Assembly in Orange County who are choices for DFA Grassroots All-Stars 2010. The three are Esiquio Uballe, Melissa Fox and Phu Nguyen.

Shepston never explains the title which leaves the reader wondering what he is trying to communicate. Is he saying it is bad that none of them are white guys? Who knows because he never explains it.

Uballe, who Shepston devotes most of the post to, is challenging Republican Assemblyman Chris Norby. One has to wonder if Uballe will want Shepston's support after this post.

The post has been removed but yahoo has a cached copy which I posted below. As of the time of this post Shepston has not provided an explanation on Daily Kos to the title or why his post was removed. If he does we will post it on our blog.

So, "What was he thinking," when he picked that title?

And I'm loving it.
There's something pretty exciting happening in Orange County, Ca. The top three choices for DFA Grassroots All-Stars 2010 are Esiquio Uballe Ca Assembly District 72, Melissa Fox Ca Assembly District 70 and Phu Nguyen Ca Assembly District 68.

All are great people and all will make us proud as State Representatives. They all have a great shot at winning their districts and helping California end the disastrous two-thirds rule for approving state budgets.

But let me get to the real purpose of this diary.

Follow me below.

As much as I like Melisa and Phu to win their districts I'm supporting Esiquio for DFA All-Star 2010. I've had some great conversations with Melissa and will be asking my friends in the 70th AD to vote for her in Nov. I've met and talked to Phu and think he's a great candidate. I'll be telling my friends in the 68th AD that they should vote for him in Nov

But for DFA All-Stars my vote is going to Esiquio Uballe. Won't you please help us with your Vote for Esiquio for DFA All-Star. His run up to #1 has been quick thanks to the energy of very dedicated volunteers who have been getting the word out.

Dr Uballe is the Associate Dean of Students for Students at Cal State University at Fullerton.

His biography is impressive and shows a person driven to serve. Here's a snippet. I encourage you to read the rest. Dr Uballe is someone we want serving us in Assembly.

Esiquio Ramos Uballe grew up in Austin, Texas, the youngest of eleven children in a family of migrant farm workers. Dr. Uballe was the first in his family to earn a college degree. He has spent his life helping the disadvantaged through his professional and his volunteer efforts. Esiquio has a long history of speaking to parents and children about the importance of higher education.

Why is he running?

I am running to protect California's future. The state and District 72 are held hostage by a minority of Republican legislators who oppose any social safety net and seek to serve corporate interests and those of the anti-immigrant, religious right. I will protect the middle class and workers of the state as well as those most vulnerable. We need to create good, green jobs that restore our economic vitality while providing a living wage with good benefits. We need to restore full affordable access to higher education and good job training.

Please vote for Dr Esiquio Uballe for DFA All-Star.

Hagman's Bill Granting Financial Relief For Members Of The Armed Forces Goes To Governor's Desk

Assembly Bill 2500 will exclude active duty military personnel from paying late renewal fees for State licenses

Sacramento- Assemblyman Curt Hagman's bill to provide financial relief for active duty military personnel cleared the State Legislature and heads to the Governor's Desk for his signature.

"This is a good and just measure to provide some aid for California military men and women," stated Assemblyman Hagman.

Under California law when a member of the armed forces who is on active duty misses the deadline for renewal on one of their business state licenses, a late fee must be paid. AB 2500 would exempt military personnel on active duty from having to pay such a fee.

"I don't believe we should punish the courageous men and women of the armed forces who put their lives at risk on our behalf everyday. It is unfair to make them pay a fine when they're busy defending our freedoms. I'm happy my colleagues agreed with me and I look forward to the Governor's signature" said Hagman.
