OC Young Democrats Endorse Williamson, Fritchle, Uballe
According to the Liberal OC, the OC Young Democrats have made their endorsements.
In the 42nd Congressional race they endorsed Michael Williamson, who is unopposed in the Democratic primary. He is challenging Republican Rep. Gary Miller.
In the 60th Assembly race, lone Democrat Gregg Fritchle was endorsed. He hopes to defeat Republican Assemblyman Curt Hagman in November.
In the 72nd Assembly race Esiquio Ramos Uballe received their endorsement in his quest to defeat first term Republican Assemblyman Chris Norby. Uballe does not have a primary opponent.

Candidate Filing: Week 1 Update
It was a slow start to the first official week of candidate filing for state and federal offices. Only three candidates from the Three Corners region have started the nomination filing process. The process involves paying the filing fee, gathering enough nomination signatures and filling forms that officially place a candidate on the ballot.
Those beginning the nomination process are Assemblyman Chris Norby (72nd Assembly seat), Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod (32nd Senate Seat) and Michael Williamson (42nd Congressional).
Signatures gathered on Signatures in-lieu forms apply to the nomination signatures required. Our most recent signatures in-lieu update provides the names of those that gathered signatures in-lieu. It is not necessary to gather these signatures but most candidates do. So far, Assemblyman Norby is the only candidate that did not.

A Ban on a College Tuition Break for Illegal Immigrants?
Yesterday we posted a story about the Daily Bulletin's article on legislation co-sponsored by Rep. Gary Miller and Buck McKeon to ban automatic citizenship for children born to illegal immigrants. We also posted a story on the positions of the 42nd Republican Congressional candidates on the issue.
The Daily Bulletin has another article on another piece of pending legislation in Congress dealing with illegal immigration. The bill, supported by Rep. Buck McKeon and Gary Miller, would ban illegal immigrants from receiving in-state college tuition. California allows illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition.
Rep. Miller told the Daily Bulletin,"You're telling me somebody who is an American citizen, was born here and parents pay taxes has to pay more than somebody here illegally. That's not right. We have a shortage of space for many students and you have limited dollars. With the dollars available, they should first be applied to people that are legally in this country and are citizens."
As I did for yesterday's post I will list the position of the other candidates for the 42nd Congressional race.
Rep. Gary Miller opposes in-state tuition for illegals, as is noted above.
David Su does not have a website or way to find out his position.
Lee McGroarty does not specifically address the issue in his immigration section. However in discussing what to do with the illegal immigrants already here, he proposes a program that would allow them to stay in the country. While in the program they would have to adhere to certain standards including, "No welfare programs or government assistance available while in program."
Philip Liberatore does not mention the issue of illegal immigration on his site.
Michael Williamson does not state a specific position but does mention the issue on his site under the immigration section. "Michael Williamson, a front line criminal justice professional has seen the streets of Los Angeles invaded by illegal aliens who have enjoyed the sanctuary protection of Special Order 40, taxpayer paid in-state school tuition for illegal migrants, and government acceptance of the sham matricula consular identification cards from Mexico."
Louie Contreras does not currently have a campaign web site.

Ron Shepston files 4th Quarter FEC Report
Ron Shepston recently filed his FEC report for the 42nd Congressional race which shows $45,579 in debt. He received $48 in donations and $196 in loans. He spent $637.
Shepston has not publicly announced if he will once again seek the Democratic nomination for the 42nd Congressional race, but with that amount of debt it seems doubtful. Shepston finished last in the 2008 Democratic primary.
Michael Williamson, who finished second in the 2008 42nd primary, and Louie Contreras are both seeking the Democratic nomination this year.

Michael Williamson- Immigration Fighter Part 2
A few weeks ago we did a story about Democratic Congressional candidate Michael Williamson calling himself an immigration fighter. My fellow blogger Little Neddy Knickers wondered what Williamson did to change Special Order 40, because he is a LAPD officer. The order prevents officers from asking about an individuals immigration status or contacting federal officials about an individuals status.
Mr. Williamson commented the following to our story, "This is Michael Williamson. In answer to "little neddy knickes", yes, I have spent the last 10 years opposing many policies and practices. Additionally, one might consider that my public opposition, via a website, including, my critical account of Special Order 40, put me in the administrative cross hairs of a large police system opposed to what I think. Read the assessment I wrote of Special Order 40 in my website. Then if you disagree perhaps it will be an informed disagreement."
I went to his site, to read about all of the things he did in opposition of Special Order 40. This is what I found in his immigration section.
"Do not fall for the misleading statements of candidates suddenly "talking tough" on illegal immigration issues. Michael Williamson, a front line criminal justice professional has seen the streets of Los Angeles invaded by illegal aliens who have enjoyed the sanctuary protection of Special Order 40, taxpayer paid in-state school tuition for illegal migrants, and government acceptance of the sham matricula consular identification cards from Mexico. "
Where is, "the assessment I wrote of Special Order 40"? One line is it? His contribution is that he has seen the effects of Special Order 40? How disappointing. Haven't we all seen the effects of Special Order 40, and similar orders, in our cities.
Williamson says he has spent the "last 10 years opposing many policies and practices." But the only example he cites is his campaign website. Just like a typical candidate for office. They call their candidacy the contribution to the fight of illegal immigration but show no examples until then.

Daily Bulletin forgets about Phil Liberatore, David Su and Michael Bryant?
The Dailly Bulletin ran an article today by Will Bigham on the political races in the Inland Empire. Problem is that they left out several candidates while focusing on others.
In covering the 32nd State Senate race they mention it will be tough to beat Senator Gloria Negrete-McLeod, her 2006 primary opponent will not challenge her and that she didn't have a 2006 general election opponent. They fail to mention that Michael Bryant of Ontario has pulled Signatures in-lieu papers to begin the process of challenging her.
The story about the 42nd Congressional race mentions both Democratic candidates, Louie Contreras and Michael Williamson, but only mentions that Lee McGroarty is challenging Congressman Gary Miller. It lists Lee McGroarty's criticisms of Miller. Phil Liberatore formed a Congressional committee with the FEC over a month ago to challenge Miller in the Republican primary. He has also began the filing process with the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters. David Su pulled Signatures in-lieu forms with the LA County Registrar about a week ago to also join the primary. Neither Liberatore or Su appear to have been given a chance to say why they are running against Miller.
I found that these candidates were running by checking with the FEC and the three county Registrar of Voters offices. One would think the Daily Bulletin would do the same. It is hard for a challenger to beat an incumbent like Negrete-McLeod or Miller. They will rely heavily on free publicity like the media. It is unfortunate that they were not featured in this article. Hopefully they will be in in future articles about these races.

Local State and Federal Race Update
Nothing has changed in the state races since our last update.
However, there has been news on the federal side. Local CPA Phil Liberatore of Whittier has entered the Republican primary for the 42nd Congressional district. Michael Williamson is officially seeking the Democratic nomination in the 42nd Congressional race. Williamson finished second in the 2008 primary and last in the 2009 Mission Viejo city council race.
Filing starts Monday, so we will have a lot more next week. Will Curt Hagman, Gloria Negrete McLeod or Norma Torres run uncontested? Will Ron Shepston seek a rematch with Williamson? Will Gary Miller draw more primary challengers? Will Lee McGroarty stay in the 42nd race or rally behind Phil Liberatore to try and defeat Miller? We will find out soon!

Last Place Vote Getter is Running for Congress?
It is interesting to see that Michael Williamson is running for Congress again. He ran for Mission Viejo City Council in 2008 and out of a field of six he placed sixth. He certainly sounds like an up and coming go getter with Congressman written all over him.
Ballot title is always an interesting aspect of elections. The amount of fretting that goes into figuring out the correct title on a ballot is huge. It sums up a candidate and can say a lot about them. So I would have thought that a Cop / Lawyer would have done better in a Republican city like Mission Viejo.
At least he doesn't commit himself to fringe groups. Oh, wait. He does seem to think that the United States needs to have a national referendum.
I wonder what is possessing him to run for Congress, again?

Local State and Federal Race Update
The campaign filing season will kick off in less than three weeks with signatures-in-lieu. Nothing has changed from my previous state and federal updates. More details are in the previous updates but I will recap.
State
Assembly Members Curt Hagman and Norma Torres have not yet drawn challengers that have filed intent with the state.
Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod has also not yet drawn a challenger.
Federal
Rep. Gary Miller and Businessman Lee McGroarty will be facing off in the 42nd Republican primary.
Michael Williamson is running for the Democratic nomination. Ron Shepston has not decided on trying again. Ed Chau will not be seeking the nomination and closed his FEC committee.
State

Local Federal Race Update
Since I did a state update earlier I thought a Federal update would be appropriate.
So far there appears to be at least three candidates in the race for the 42nd Congressional race.
Republican Primary
Congressman Gary Miller and Lee McGroarty have both filed with the FEC to seek the Republican nomination.
Democratic Primary
2008 Democratic primary second place finisher Michael Williamson appears to be the only candidate so far to enter the race for the Democratic nomination.
2008 Democratic primary third place finisher Ron Shepston may seek a rematch. His campaign renewed the web site's domain for one year this past April, but there have been no updates to the site since June 2008. One deterrent may be that Shepston still has $45,544 in debt from his 2008 race.
2008 Democratic nominee Ed Chau, who was recently reelected to the Montebello USD school board, terminated his committee with the FEC in October, so he will not be running again.
Candidate filing begins with signatures-in-lieu of filing fees forms on January 1. Although County Registrar of Voters offices will not be open until January 4. The deadline to file nomination papers is March 12.
