Congressman Miller recently hosted a reception for thirteen students from California’s 42nd Congressional District that have been selected to attend a Service Academy this year. These exceptional students have received Congressional, Senatorial or JROTC nominations to attend these fine institutions.

Attending the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York will be Ryan Kim, Ye Young Kim, Minki Lee, Todd MacDonald, Alana Mitchem, and William O’Keefe.

Leaving for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland will be Daniel Lim, Trevor Samaha, and Alexandra Westberg.

Enrolling at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado will be Robert Gutierrez, Justin Moon, Elliott Myers, and Jack Waller.

Bob Huff, Senate Minority Leader?

Capitol Weekly is reporting that Diamond Bar Sen. Bob Huff is one of two Senators being considered for Minority Leader by his fellow Senators.

Huff was elected to the Senate in 2008 and is currently the Republican Caucus Chairman.

His competition is San Diego area Sen. Joel Anderson.

Current Leader Bob Dutton, who is term limited, will be running for the State Assembly. Dutton previously served one term in the Assembly, so he can serve two more.

Senator Huff Seeks Artist Submissions for Capitol Contest

Artwork Winners Will be Displayed at State Capitol

SACRAMENTO: Senator Bob Huff (R-Diamond Bar) is now seeking entries for the California State Senate art show, which features local artwork from every corner of California. Artists from the 29th Senate District can submit as many works as they would like, and Senator Huff will select the entry that best represents his district, which covers portions of Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino Counties.

“Artwork entries can include oil paintings, works on paper, weavings, wall hangings and sculpture,” said Senator Huff. “However, the works must be no larger than three feet by five feet, as space at the State Capitol is limited. The purpose of this event is to showcase California’s original artists.”

The California State Senate art show competition is open to all ages. All submissions will be treated with the utmost respect and care and will be safely returned to artists at the end of the exhibit.

Artists who wish to enter the contest should send a photograph of the artwork submission, either by mail or email, with a brief description of the entry. Artists should also send a brief description of themselves and why they feel their artwork best represents the 29th Senate District.

“The deadline for submitting entries is February 23rd,” said Senator Huff. “That will give my office time to review each entry, notify the winner and ship the art to the State Capitol in Sacramento by March 18th.”

Entries can be delivered to Senator Huff’s District Office in Walnut. The address is 20888 Amar Road, Suite 205, Walnut, CA 91789. Photos of entries can also be emailed to Senator Huff through his District Director at tim.shaw@sen.ca.gov. Please put California State Senate Art Show Submission in the subject line.

Update: Rep. Jane Harman to Resign Seat

According to Politico, Los Angeles County Democrat Rep. Jane Harman will resign from Congress to become President of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Politico is also reporting that Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn will seek election to the seat once a special election is called by Governor Brown.

Update: Secretary of State Debra Bowen and 2008 Democratic candidate Marcy Winograd are looking at the race.

Politico is reporting that Los Angeles Democratic Party Chairman Eric Bauman was informed by Winograd last night that she intended to switch her party registration to "Decline to State." Winograd claims she hasn't left the party but considered it.

SACRAMENTO - Assemblyman Curt Hagman, R-Chino Hills issued the following statement concerning Governor Brown's proposal to place extensions of previous tax increases on the ballot.

"In 2009, I was one of only three GOP Assemblymen to oppose Proposition 1A from the beginning. I will not be voting to place these five year tax extensions on the ballot."

Re-elected to the Legislature in 2010, Assemblyman Hagman also serves as Assistant Republican Floor Leader, responsible for representing Republican interests on procedure and process on the Assembly floor.

The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over international monetary policy; international finance and banking; international financial and monetary organizations, including the International Monetary Fund and World Bank; and promotion of international trade in financial services.

Senate leader Darrell Steinberg announced yesterday that he was replacing State Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod as Chair of the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee. Sen. Curren Price Jr. (D-Inglewood) will be the new Chair.

McLeod told the LA Times, "It's the prerogative of the pro tem to appoint who he wants. I just wish I had gotten a heads-up.''

Assemblyman Chris Norby Comments on Election

72nd District voters have returned me to the California State Assembly with 63% of their votes in the November 2nd Election. This marked my fourth election in less than one year, starting with last year's November 17th Special Election to fill a sudden vacancy.

I'm grateful and honored by this support and look forward to my first full legislative term, when my bills will have an opportunity to go through the entire legislative process with a better chance of success.

That success was made more challenging, however, by the loss of one seat by Assembly Republicans, cutting our numbers from 29 to 28 with the Democrats up to 52 seats. Proposition 25 lowers the 2/3rds threshold to a simple majority for budget passage, so there'll be no more need to include Republican votes. The majority party will now "own" the budget they pass.

Combine all of these factors with a new Democratic governor (if one can call Jerry Brown "new"-"recycled" might be a better word) and it will be tougher for Republican legislators to be relevant at all. The nationwide Republican sweep was a no-show in California. The Democrats won or are ahead in every statewide race.

Still, I believe I can be an effective voice in Sacramento. With the state broke and tax increases still largely off the table, efficiencies must be achieved. The Bell/Vernon scandals have demonstrated the need for local government reform and transparency. The pension crisis only gets deeper. Parents need clearer information to seek accountability from K-12 public schools. The community college system is adrift and needs a tighter definition of its core purpose. Infrastructure financing needs a closer nexus to those who directly benefit.

As a believer in personal freedom and responsibility, my first impulse is not to pass more laws or create new programs, but to reform or repeal those that are onerous, expensive, or obsolete. As a minority party member, I can't write-off all of my counterparts in the majority, nor compromise my principles for the appearance of accomplishment. But, I can look for those areas of common agreement where solutions transcend the simple liberal-to-conservative spectrum.

That political spectrum is not a flat line from left to right. It is textured and multi-dimensional and some solutions transcend easy labeling. Opportunities do exist to work with those who may disagree 90% of the time, but that 10% provides rich opportunities.

I look forward to working with local officials in my district. Noteworthy November winners include my District Director Bruce Whitaker's election to the Fullerton City Council. Supervisor Shawn Nelson was easily elected to a full term, and we'll be tackling pension issues together. Re-elected to the Orange City Council was Denis Bilodeau, my former Supervisorial staffer who I work closely with on water issues. Chris Thompson bucked strong union opposition to become the top vote-getter for Fullerton School Board.

I will be here in the district daily until January 3rd, when the legislature reconvenes with all of its new members, of which term limits assures a constant supply. Committee assignments will be coordinated with our new Assembly Republican Leader Connie Conway who was elected in Thursday's closed door caucus. I've known Connie for years, due to our years as County Supervisors, when she served on the Tulare County Board, and I look forward to her leadership.

Tea Party Express, one of the most influential Tea Party groups, has announced their West Coast Congressional endorsements. They include Rep. Gary Miller, Rep. Ed Royce and Assemblyman Van Tran, who is challenging Rep. Loretta Sanchez.

The Press Enterprise took a look at the 32nd Senate race between Democratic Senator Gloria Negrete McLeod and Republican Earl De Vries in today's paper.

One part of the article discussed the political leanings of the district.

"The district is overwhelmingly Democratic, having preferred Barack Obama by 38 points over John McCain two years ago. But it also has a socially conservative streak; Prop. 8, the narrowly approved 2008 measure that banned same-sex marriage, passed with two-thirds of the vote in the 32nd."

Rep. Gary Miller Joins the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute in Honoring “Angels in Adoption”

Washington, Oct 8 -

On Wednesday, the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) hosted its 12th Annual Angels in Adoption Gala in Washington, DC. The gala highlights the work of celebrities and individuals across the country working tirelessly on behalf of children in U.S. foster care and orphans around the world. This year, Rep. Gary Miller nominated Keith and Jennifer McNichols of Chino Hills as his 2010 Angels in Adoption.

Following the gala, Rep. Gary Miller released the following statement:

“Every year I look forward to honoring a Southern California family that changes lives and communities through adoption, and Keith and Jennifer McNichols have done just that. In addition to their three biological children, Keith and Jennifer McNichols have lovingly integrated five Ethiopian children into their home. Through the McNichols’ example and passion for adoption, several other families in their community have also adopted children from Ethiopia. Keith and Jennifer McNichols’ commitment to the betterment of the lives of children less fortunate than themselves and their dedication to demonstrating their faith through actions are truly commendable.”

About Keith and Jennifer McNichols:

Keith and Jennifer McNichols have three biological children and have adopted five children from Ethiopia. In total, the McNichols’ have spearheaded the adoption of 18 children from Ethiopia to five different families in the Chino Hills area and counseled with families nationwide both pre- and post-adoption. Their daughters, Fevan and Tsion, were 14 and 8 when adopted in 2003. Unknowingly, Fevan carried a rare form of tuberculosis and would have died within 1-2 years had she stayed in Ethiopia. In 2005, the McNichols returned to Ethiopia twice – once to find Tsion’s aged grandparents and a second time to adopt a six year old boy they’d met named Miki. Miki worked as a shoeshine boy to support his parents before they died; after that, he was on the streets. In 2006, the McNichols returned again to Ethiopia on a service project and met Fikerte and Shawn – 8 and 9 year old siblings living more or less on the street. Fikerte and Shawn came home in 2007. The McNichols have spread their passion for adoption and orphans to their local church which is now supporting a new children’s home in Ethiopia. Fevan, now in college, plans on traveling to Ethiopia during the holidays to begin a service ministry caring for the elderly. Others in the family will go in the summer of 2011 to work with the orphan home with a group from the church.

Dear Community Members,

I am pleased to announce the opening of my "mobile" office locations for your convenience.
Once a month at various locations throughout the district, my staff will be on hand in your community to answer questions and provide support for state related issues.

This service could not have been possible without the generous support of our local cities. I would also like to note that these offices will not cost any additional taxpayer dollars. They are simply a convenience extended to those unable to travel to my Chino Hills district office.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIF. (October 5, 2010) –The top polling candidates for the 47th Congressional District office will hold their only pre-election debate on two special broadcasts of KOCE’s Real Orange. Incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, and challenger, Republican Assemblyman Van Tran will tape two 30-minute debate programs on Wednesday, October 13. The debate specials, moderated by veteran news anchor Ed Arnold, will premiere on Wednesday, October 13 and Thursday, October 14 at 6:30 PM, respectively.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez: "Vietnamese...trying to take this seat"

We don't normally cover news from Rep. Loretta Sanchez's district but this one caught our eye.

Politico has a story about a recent interview Sanchez did with Univision in Spanish. According to a translation Sanchez said, "The Vietnamese and the Republicans are, with an intensity, trying to take this seat from which we have done so much for our community — to take this seat and give it to this Van Tran, who is very anti-immigrant and very anti-Hispanic."

Tran's campaign said that this, "attack against immigrants and the Vietnamese community on national television is shocking. The 47th congressional district belongs to the people and not an individual ethnicity."

Now for a "What were they thinking," story from a former Three Corners Congressional candidate.

2008 Democratic Congressional candidate Ron Shepston, who posts on Daily Kos as "CanYouBeAngryAndStillDream," today posted a story titled, "Not One White Guy in the Bunch." He describes three Democratic candidates running for the State Assembly in Orange County who are choices for DFA Grassroots All-Stars 2010. The three are Esiquio Uballe, Melissa Fox and Phu Nguyen.

Shepston never explains the title which leaves the reader wondering what he is trying to communicate. Is he saying it is bad that none of them are white guys? Who knows because he never explains it.

Uballe, who Shepston devotes most of the post to, is challenging Republican Assemblyman Chris Norby. One has to wonder if Uballe will want Shepston's support after this post.

The post has been removed but yahoo has a cached copy which I posted below. As of the time of this post Shepston has not provided an explanation on Daily Kos to the title or why his post was removed. If he does we will post it on our blog.

So, "What was he thinking," when he picked that title?

And I'm loving it.
There's something pretty exciting happening in Orange County, Ca. The top three choices for DFA Grassroots All-Stars 2010 are Esiquio Uballe Ca Assembly District 72, Melissa Fox Ca Assembly District 70 and Phu Nguyen Ca Assembly District 68.

All are great people and all will make us proud as State Representatives. They all have a great shot at winning their districts and helping California end the disastrous two-thirds rule for approving state budgets.

But let me get to the real purpose of this diary.

Follow me below.

As much as I like Melisa and Phu to win their districts I'm supporting Esiquio for DFA All-Star 2010. I've had some great conversations with Melissa and will be asking my friends in the 70th AD to vote for her in Nov. I've met and talked to Phu and think he's a great candidate. I'll be telling my friends in the 68th AD that they should vote for him in Nov

But for DFA All-Stars my vote is going to Esiquio Uballe. Won't you please help us with your Vote for Esiquio for DFA All-Star. His run up to #1 has been quick thanks to the energy of very dedicated volunteers who have been getting the word out.

Dr Uballe is the Associate Dean of Students for Students at Cal State University at Fullerton.

His biography is impressive and shows a person driven to serve. Here's a snippet. I encourage you to read the rest. Dr Uballe is someone we want serving us in Assembly.

Esiquio Ramos Uballe grew up in Austin, Texas, the youngest of eleven children in a family of migrant farm workers. Dr. Uballe was the first in his family to earn a college degree. He has spent his life helping the disadvantaged through his professional and his volunteer efforts. Esiquio has a long history of speaking to parents and children about the importance of higher education.

Why is he running?

I am running to protect California's future. The state and District 72 are held hostage by a minority of Republican legislators who oppose any social safety net and seek to serve corporate interests and those of the anti-immigrant, religious right. I will protect the middle class and workers of the state as well as those most vulnerable. We need to create good, green jobs that restore our economic vitality while providing a living wage with good benefits. We need to restore full affordable access to higher education and good job training.

Assembly Bill 2500 will exclude active duty military personnel from paying late renewal fees for State licenses

Sacramento- Assemblyman Curt Hagman's bill to provide financial relief for active duty military personnel cleared the State Legislature and heads to the Governor's Desk for his signature.

"This is a good and just measure to provide some aid for California military men and women," stated Assemblyman Hagman.

Under California law when a member of the armed forces who is on active duty misses the deadline for renewal on one of their business state licenses, a late fee must be paid. AB 2500 would exempt military personnel on active duty from having to pay such a fee.

"I don't believe we should punish the courageous men and women of the armed forces who put their lives at risk on our behalf everyday. It is unfair to make them pay a fine when they're busy defending our freedoms. I'm happy my colleagues agreed with me and I look forward to the Governor's signature" said Hagman.

Today, U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker announced that gay marriages in California are allowed to resume beginning August 18, 2010. This follows last week’s ruling that California’s Proposition 8 is unconstitutional. Following this announcement, Rep. Gary Miller issued the following statement:

“In 2008, a majority of Californians voiced their belief at the polls that marriage is a covenant shared by a man and a woman. Unfortunately, last week Judge Walker inflicted his personal agenda and defied the will of the majority of Californians. His decision undermines the voice of Californians and citizens across the country who have sought to define marriage in their states as the union between one man and one woman.

“Judge Walker’s announcement today that gay marriages are allowed to resume beginning next week is both hasty and uncalled for. This decision could have severe legal implications should the Court of the Appeals overturn the decision. I believe firmly that Judge Walker’s actions should be opposed and the decision should be quickly overturned.”

Assemblyman Curt Hagman: Time For Democrats To Work With Republicans On Responsible No-Tax Budget

Three weeks have passed since the beginning of the 2010-11 fiscal year to pass a state budget. Yet California is still without one and people are right to ask what on earth is going on in Sacramento.

Months before the budget deadline, my Republican colleagues and I called on Democrats to work with us. We posted 100-day countdown calendars on our office doors as a reminder that the deadline was fast approaching and urged them to work with us so we would have a solution in time.

Unfortunately, the Democrat leadership rebuffed our hand of cooperation. They instead said that they would rather delay the budget process until Republicans agree to raise your taxes and reject spending reductions.

Some political observers even said that the delay could be a ploy to convince Californians that the two-thirds requirement to pass a budget was the main cause of the delay. One liberal Democrat went so far to say that his party should allow the state to reach a more desperate situation when kids go back to school in August to get Republicans to sign off on higher taxes.

In the meantime, I have been meeting with constituents and stakeholders to listen to their budget concerns. We discussed ways we can address those concerns in a difficult economy and conveyed their suggestions to my colleagues. Yet we have seen no real action from Democrats, other than press conferences to pound home the theme that the state "needs more revenue "(code for higher taxes) to protect government spending and welfare programs we cannot afford.
Even more telling, we have not seen a unified and detailed budget proposal from Senate and Assembly Democrats that can be vetted. All they have put forward is a "statement of principles" that reaffirms their commitment to big government. A statement of principles is not a serious budget that will close a $19.1 billion deficit.

As a result, without a balanced budget in place California state government spends $52 million more each day than it receives in revenues.

In contrast, my Republican colleagues and I have made it clear that we support the Governor's budget blueprint he released in May. It is a detailed plan that addresses the deficit without higher taxes.

Republicans have always been willing to work with Democrats to craft a bipartisan budget that protects taxpayers and funds essential services such as schools without raising taxes. We know that tough choices will need to be made to reduce spending, which is why we have asked Democrats for months to work with us.

Yet the Democrat leadership shows no signs of urgency and refuses to budge, hoping that weeks of delay will work to their advantage. We must get down to work on the budget now, so we can get California back on track. It is long overdue for Democrats to work with Republicans on passing a responsible no-tax budget that will move our state forward. A delay may serve the interests of a few liberal politicians and interest groups, but it hurts the state as a whole.

Passing a balanced budget is one of the most important - if not the most important - duty of a legislator. We are elected to make tough choices and I stand ready to do my part to craft a responsible, no-tax budget as soon as possible.

Candidates in the 42nd recently had to file their financial reports with the FEC, which show how much money was raised and spent leading up to the June promary election. Now that the vote totals have been finalized with the Secretary of State's office we can see how much Rep. Gary Miller and Phil Liberatore spent per vote. For this I added the amount spent since January 1 divided by the total votes.

Miller: $328,966.80 spent, 32,669 votes= $10.07
Liberatore: $794,537 spent, 25,181 votes =$31.55

So Liberatore spent more than triple what Miller did per vote and more than double overall. Wow.

It starts,

Assemblyman Curt Hagman: Finally Recognized, The 2nd Amendment

Californians who legally own firearms can be encouraged by last month's U.S. Supreme Court's ruling. In a landmark decision, the Court found that the constitutional right to bear arms applies not just to the federal government, but to state and local governments as well. In other words, owning a gun in the home for self defense is now officially recognized as a fundamental American right that cannot be violated by overzealous politicians on any level of government.

This is a remarkable defense of our Second Amendment right. This specific issue came about because Chicago instituted a misguided city-wide ban on handguns, which was intended to clamp down on deadly gun violence. Instead of just targeting thugs, it restricted law-abiding residents from owning guns to protect themselves in their own homes. Thankfully the Supreme Court saw it correctly, acknowledging that "Self defense is a basic right, recognized by many legal systems from ancient times to the present day," as Justice Samuel Alito wrote in the majority opinion. The Court's ruling recognizes the original intent of the Second Amendment which provides that: "...the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

However, this victory is only a first step, as it is still unclear where the decision will lead for the future of our current gun laws and those that could be enacted in the future. Indeed, Justice Alito wrote that the ruling "does not imperil every law regulating firearms." In the years going forward there will be significant battles over the true meaning of this ruling, and the numerous complex rules and regulations governing firearms. Particularly in California, the ruling gives Second Amendment supporters a powerful argument to challenge dubious proposals that hurt lawful gun owners. We now need to work on challenging the most restrictive laws that are already in place. While no one can predict the long-term consequences of the Court's ruling, there is a good chance it will lead to future victories over restrictions on Second Amendment rights and force lawmakers to think twice before passing more burdensome laws.

Government has a critical responsibility to help ensure the safety of our families, but it needs do act in ways that respect our rights as a free people. We can keep our communities safe by improving enforcement of existing laws that target criminals who use guns. Taking guns away from the "bad guys" and putting them behind bars will make California safer, without targeting law-abiding citizens.

With the Supreme Court's reaffirmation at the judicial level, I hope we can now move beyond debating attempts to undermine the Second Amendment in the Legislature. It is time for lawmakers to stop undermining lawful gun owners with more restrictive measures and to start working on issues that matter most to hardworking Californians, such as job creation.

With the primary election over and the General Election less than four months until the election there are two candidates who appear not to have campaign web sites. Campaign sites can be one of the most important tools for a candidate to communicate with voters about what they stand for and believe in.

I have not been able to find sites for Earl De Vries and Gregg Fritchle. De Vries is the Republican nominee in the 32nd State Senate district, challenging Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod. Fritchle is the Democratic nominee in the 60th Assembly District, challenging Assemblyman Curt Hagman.

If they put up a web site just let us know and we will mention it on our blog.

An editorial in the Orange County Register yesterday referenced some comments Assemblyman Chris Norby wrote on antiwar.com.

Antiwar.com claims it is "Your best source for antiwar news, viewpoints, and activities.

In his comments, titled "Steele Speaks the Truth," Norby's comments included;

"If he [Obama] is such a student of history, has he not understood the one thing you don’t do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? Everyone who has tried over a thousand years has failed, and there are reasons for that.” In restating this obvious historical fact, Republican Chairman Michael Steele has roused a chorus of neocon critics calling for his resignation.

Instead, they should heed the words of Douglas MacArthur, who warned another young president – John F. Kennedy – in 1961: “Anyone wanting to commit American ground forces to the mainland of Asia should have his head examined.”

Those who take issue with Steele should state why he – and MacArthur – are wrong. And we Republicans who believe they should be heeded should speak up. I am one of them. There are others who question an open-ended commitment of blood and treasure to prop up Hamid Karzai and his illusory government."

Reception Held to Honor Service Academy Appointees

Last Saturday, Congressman Miller hosted a reception for thirteen high school and college students from California’s 42nd Congressional District that have been selected to attend a Service Academy this year. These exceptional students have received Congressional or Senatorial nominations to attend these fine institutions.

Attending the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York will be Jake Pendleton of Yorba Linda, Jeff Cooley of La Habra, Apphia Kim of La Habra Heights, Brock Redondo of Mission Viejo, and Joon Eo of Brea.

Leaving for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Marlyand will be Graham Vickers of Diamond Bar, Elaine Zhong of Chino Hills, Lucille Lu of Diamond Bar and Nathalie Pauwels of Mission Viejo.

42nd Election Results Updated

The results for the Republican primary in the 42nd district have been updated (3:32pm today) on the Secretary of State's web site. The result is the same but the percentages have changed slightly. Phil Liberatore has gone up 0.4%, while the other three candidates have gone down 0.1% to 0.2%

Robert Vaughn not re-elected

Robert Vaughn, who had claimed he was the Chairman of the Los Angeles County Republican Party until a judge ruled he was not, was not re-elected to the Party's county Central Committee. Only members of the Central Committee can hold leadership positions in it.

We first covered the controversy surrounding Vaughn after a Phil Liberatore for Congress mail piece claimed Vaughn was the Chairman of the county party and had endorsed Liberatore over Rep. Gary Miller.

Even though defeated for Central Committee, Vaughn is still a candidate for Congress. He is challenging Rep. Grace Napolitano in the General Election.

In the election for Central Committee Vaughn placed 17th out 0f 18 candidates with 2.35% of the vote. The top seven were elected.

Rep. Tom McClintock responds to Phil Liberatore allegation, says he "should know better"

On Wednesday night on the Rick Amato show, Phil Liberatore and Amato claimed that Rep. Gary Miller had used a 2008 endorsement from Rep. Tom McClintock. Amato said that Miller sent out an email that said that Rep. Tom McClintock endorsed Miller. Amato said that the endorsement was from "two years ago," but didn't say why he thought that. Liberatore agreed with Amato.

Today we received the following comment from Rep. Tom McClintock stating that he did endorse Miller.

Statement from Rep. Tom McClintock: "The claim that Gary Miller improperly claimed my endorsement in the 2010 Republican primary is absolutely and completely false, and the people making it should know better. I enthusiastically support Gary Miller's candidacy and was proud to endorse him in the recent primary. On the floor of the House of Representatives I have seen first hand -- day in and day out -- his devotion to taxpayers and to the conservative cause and I could not possibly be stronger in my respect and support of him."

A Message from Congressman Miller...

I am humbled and honored for the outpouring of support I received during this past election. It was a hard fought battle—a lot of money was spent by my opponents—but my supporters and I always remained true to our core conservative values, looked past the lies and false assertions, and pressed on.

Thinking back on the election, I’m disappointed so much money was spent by Republicans to attack Republicans—and how that money could have been used to take back Congress in November or at least defeat the U.S. Senate’s most liberal member, Barbara Boxer.

But this election allowed me the opportunity to broadcast the need to lower taxes to jump start our economy, enact tougher immigration laws to stop taxpayer handouts to illegals, rebuild our crumbling roads and infrastructure, and decrease government spending.

Times are tough and voters are angry—and rightfully so. Congressional Democrats and President Obama have increased taxes, socialized our healthcare and dumped billions of taxpayer dollars to prop up union-plagued industries.

And Democrats are not done yet: amnesty for illegal immigrants and a Cap and Trade tax scheme are right around the corner.

Every day I’m fighting tooth and nail to stop them—as I believe the residents of the 42nd district expect me to do.

For at the end of the day, it’s the voters who are my employer and I am truly honored they have once again put their faith and trust in me to represent their interests in Washington.

Phil Liberatore comments on election; Received Death Threat, Dogs killed

Former 42nd Congressional candidate Phil Liberatore was a guest on the Rick Amato show last night.

Some of the comments;

Liberatore said that during the campaign he received a death threat and had his two dogs killed. He alleged that the day after they were killed a picture of one of the dogs appeared in a campaign mailer from Rep. Gary Miller. I wonder why this is the first we have heard of the death threats or the killings of his dogs from Liberatore. Liberatore didn't say anything about a police investigation or how or why he thought it was a picture of his dog in the Miller mail piece.

Liberatore said that he was going to look at his future political options and try to "keep the momentum going."

When asked by Amato if he had heard from Miller or any of the other candidates he said, " No I haven't heard from anybody." I wonder if he knows that it is customary to call the winner, not the other way around. Former 42nd candidate Lee McGroarty commented on our blog yesterday that he would be calling Miller, Liberatore and David Su.

Amato said that on Monday Miller sent out an email that said that Rep. Tom McClintock endorsed Miller. Amato said that the endorsement was from "two years ago," but didn't say why he thought that.

My wife Dana and I want to thank everyone who came out and voted for me in this election. You will never know how much this means to me. It is a tremendous honor to have you put your faith in me and the ideas I put forward to ‘Take Back America’.

I also want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who put in precious time placing yard signs, stuffing envelopes, making phone calls and sending out all those postcards. Your enthusiasm and encouragement kept me going all those late nights and early mornings. I would also like to thank the tremendous team that served during the campaign.

While we lost this race I do believe a clear message has been sent, as the incumbent received less than 50% of the vote. I call upon Congressman Miller to take note as to how We The People voted. I am disappointed the vote was split amongst three challengers, as it is evident we had the momentum going into the final weeks. However, if I had to do it all over again I would enter the race again tomorrow.

Having walked the neighborhoods and meeting the people of our community personally was one of the richest experiences of my life. I entered this race because I have a great concern about the direction of our country. But as I walked the district meeting our neighbors and experiencing the support of the voters, I am hopeful. Please do not give up on this good fight to restore accountability, fiscal responsibility and the values this country was founded upon, they are too important. I encourage you to get involved on any and every level as our Founding Fathers envisioned a country of citizens in leadership not career politicians.

As you know the primaries are over and the results are in. Congressman Gary Miller, the GOP incumbent, my opponent has retained his seat. I know many of you are disappointed, some of you are discouraged, but don’t be. I know I’m not. I am content with my results and very humbled on the journey that I had embarked on. I fought the good fight and decided to run for Congress because this country needs real change and ran with sheer passion, the strength of conviction to stand up for what I believe in. I just want to say congratulations to Congressman Gary Miller on his reelection and I will be supporting him to continue to fight for his constituents and to be a voice in Washington. Freedom is precious and I too will continue to fight, to contribute and to do what is right in improving the quality of life for all Americans.

Whittier Daily News story on 42nd race, Liberatore comments

The Whittier Daily News has a story on the 42nd race including some strong comments from Liberatore.

Liberatore told the paper, "Gary Miller had the press in his pocket. He controls all of the cities. He's the incumbent and everybody is bowing down to this guy. It was hard to get any response from the media."

The article spoke about the amount of money spent on the race. It stated, "Liberatore mailed fliers and purchased newspaper ads, after loaning his campaign $725,000. Miller reported spending about $330,000 but said that only $200,000 was for the campaign. The rest was for office expenses."

Billy Wojciak Wins 42nd Primary Predictions

We asked our readers to guess the finishing order of the 42nd Republican primary. Two readers, Billy Wojciak and MV Conservative, guessed correctly but Billy was the closest on the percentage Miller would receive. He guessed 47%, Miller received 49%.

Lee McGroarty comments on Election

42nd Congressional candidate Lee McGroarty left the following comment on our blog this morning. McGroaty finished third with 10.7% of the vote.

Last evening, my campaign held a celebration party at our home. Lisa and I were so pleased with the turnout. It was a chance for us to say thank you for a truly wonderful year. We couldn't have been more touched by the outpouring of love and support for the efforts of my team, my family and most importantly, my supporters.

Did we win? Absolutely. I can truly hold my head up high knowing we fought a great fight. I believed Congressman Miller needed to be challenged and our goal was to offer a choice to the people of the district. My entering the race assured that. Though I wish I could have gone head-to-head against Miller, others also stood up and challenged. That is Democracy!

As a gesture of goodwill, I will be calling each of my opponents today. For now, I tip my hat to Congressman Miller for his victory. I also applaud Phil and David for their efforts. We all won. But more importantly, the People won. This is what elections are about. In the end, it was not about us -- the candidates. In the end, it was about the People electing leaders.

To Congressman Miller, I wish you the very best. The People need you to be a leader for them, not yourself. If you see potential conflicts, run the other way. Make a real difference in people's lives. Otherwise, you know full well I will be watching.

For Phil and David, whatever you decide to do in the future, please know that I respect your decision for running and wish you the very best.

As for me??? I'm taking a few weeks off to think about whether politics is in my future. For now, I will get some needed sleep.

To Lucky Day, you've been a royal pain in the A$$. Yet, you were also the one place my team could go for information. I'm happy to say that I stayed far away from your site for several months (the daggers hit hard a few times!)

Though I felt you were a Miller site (still do), I commend your willingness to post our ideas and counter arguments. For that, you served a worthy purpose.

Rep. Gary Miller has defeated three challengers to win reelection. With all precincts reporting Miller received 49%. Phil Liberatore was his closest challenger with 37.2%.

My wife Lisa and I would like to thank all our supporters for their tireless efforts and devotion to our campaign. A year ago, I felt our economy would be in dire circumstances, the incumbents would be under attack, and the country would want to move back to common sense conservative values. I was right on all three fronts.

A year later, I am so proud of our campaign. We have fought hard and have taken on the Republican establishment and a 6 term Congressman. We set out to improve the Party and to let our Congressman know that We The People are watching and we will act when you let us down.

I would also like to thank the numerous Tea Parties that endorsed my candidacy: iCaucus, the Conservative Party (California), and the SOC912 group. Also, Kelly Good, founder of the Chino Hills Tea Party has not only been courageous but is an example of what is right with those who believe in the greatness of America.

Today is June 8th and I am confident we will win. Regardless of the outcome, I will hold my head high knowing I fought an honorable race and have served the People of the 42nd District well.

The 42nd Republican Primary: Some things to watch for

Here are a few things to watch for today in the Republican primary in the 42nd Congressional district.

Orange County: More than 2/3 of registered Republicans in the 42nd live in Orange County. However, none of the four candidates live there. This is where the mail pieces from Rep. Gary Miller and Phil Liberatore will separate them from David Su and Lee McGroarty. Name id means a lot in an election.

Candidate's City: If Miller is losing Diamond Bar or Liberatore is losing Whittier, it is a bad sign of things to come for them. This is especially true for Diamond Bar. Miller has been representing the city since he started in politics. If he loses there, the race is lost.

Lee McGroarty responds to Marc Harris and not being able to speak at Tea Party Event

Yesterday we posted a story that 42nd Congressional candidate Lee McGroarty was not allowed to speak at a Tea Party event, while fellow candidate Phil Liberatore was. Later Marc Harris, the person several commenters stated was the person who didn't allow McGroarty to speak, responded to the issue. In his response Harris said there was, "suspicion now being raised that McGroarty has made a back-room deal with Miller to stay in the race in order to split the vote, and ensure Miller's re-election."

My name is Lee McGroarty. I am writing this personally. I wish no disrespect to Marc or the NOCCC. Though I felt disappointed by not being allowed to speak after being attacked by Rick Amato, I understood.

However, when Mr. Harris accused me of taking money from Miller to stay in the race, it struck at my heart and soul. I served our great country for 6 years in the military and for you to attack me in such a way was an insult to anyone running for office let alone an honored veteran of our Armed Forces.

You are better than that Marc. You espouse yourself as a defender of Tea Party ideals yet yesterday, you became the very person your group detests. You chose to defame a candidate for Congress solely because you believe he stands in the way of your candidate winning.

Let me be clear so there is no misunderstanding. I have raised as much as Phil if not more. I have spent less than 90% of what Phil has yet I have been on the front cover of 7 local newspapers since May 4th; Fox 11 for 2 1/2 minutes on one of the hardest hitting pieces of journalism against Congressman Miller; KFI Radio for 2 days with Miller and me battling it out (in fact, more than 30 airings of the "Little Girl" comment ran during one day of radio news; and three editorials between me and Asst. Secretary of HUD Orlando Cabrera. Some people have placed this news coverage at more than $1 million in "paid advertising" yet I spent ZERO for it. I was covered because I did my research and spent 7 months investigating while Phil was deciding whether to enter the race or not. How many times has Phil been covered? Hmmmm. Still waiting?

Marc, you sold your soul and your principles for money. In fact, I know your price. Your vote was bought for $725,000 yet you sling allegations towards me and insult me by saying I took bribes from Miller. I'm sure Miller will not be sending me a Christmas card this year though you think he and I are cozy now. That's hilarious.

One last point: How can any of us expect a BIG SPENDER like Phil to go to Washington and CUT SPENDING?$725,000 is a lot of money. Who do you think he will be beholden too to get that money paid back? Remember, he LOANED his campaign the money!

I owe no one and am owed nothing. Phil cannot say the same.

This is Lee McGroarty again. Marc, I read your comments about the polls. As I mentioned yesterday, if Phil's polling was so good, why didn't he produce mailers touting his great poll numbers? The reason I didn't know of any polls is that there are NONE! Liberatore released polls today that are HIS OWN!

Oh, so there is no ambiguity in the actual poll numbers, I was planning on voting for myself so I don't believe I am at 0%!!! Unless you think that I am truly that cozy with Miller that you think I am voting for him?

The answer is that you and Liberatore are trying to pull the wool over the voters' eyes and it won't work. Your guy is scared because he spent 3/4 of a Million Dollars and he may not win.

You can't buy someone's votes without ideas. I have been endorsed by numerous Tea Parties -- unlike Phil who has received ABSOLUTELY ZERO Tea Party Group endorsements. Yet, you call him the choice of the majority of Tea Party members. You may want to check that poll again. Your numbers seem to be a bit off.

Phil Liberatore loans himself another $150,000; Lee McGroarty raises $3,400

According to documents filed with the FEC today, 42nd Congressional candidate Phil Liberatore has loaned himself $150,000 bringing to $725,000 the total Liberatore has loaned his campaign.

42nd Congressional candidate Lee McGroarty reported on Sunday that he raised $3,400 from two donors.

Phil Liberatore Email has new 42nd Poll, now he has 56%

Earlier today we posted a poll from 42nd Congressional candidate Phil Liberatore that shows him ahead of Rep. Gary Miller 27% to 21%.

I have just received an email from the Liberatore campaign that shows him ahead of Miller 56%-44%. So he gained 29% in one day, Lee McGroarty and David Su received 0%, and no one was undecided? Seems unlikely.
